We believe that the Middle School years are the springtime of human development. A uniquely rich opportunity to plant seeds of awareness and insight. We flip the lights on, brightly, in these most formative years because our world needs fully engaged human beings.
We are not a school; we are a learning lab. Making sense of the unknown is where we discover who we are. We help young minds find their passion for learning, to build a flywheel for perpetual curiosity. We embrace failure, paradox and complexity with playfulness.
We are unapologetically audacious in our mission and define success as feeling fully alive and consciously engaged in the world. Anyone, and we mean anyone, can go to our school, as long as they bring their uniqueness, courage and beauty.
Our staff is gifted - they love their jobs and would go to Millennium if they were adolescents again. They lead forums, quests and expeditions that immerse our children in the world outside of school. They are guides more than teachers.
Curiosity, creativity and compassion are the most complex subjects to score high on at Millennium. We teach these relentlessly. Our kids leave school inspired.
We believe that happiness and achievement are only meaningful in tango. One without the other is crippled. Peace in our hearts is our first goal. Knowing things follows naturally.
Our kids will go to any school and do well…will know how to fall in love and love unconditionally…will cry and never feel less for it…will never fear to be who they are, because they see joy and power in being themselves.
If you are a looking for the best middle school experience for your child, definitely place Millennium on the top of your list of schools to consider.
My husband and I have an 8th grader at Millennium and he absolutely loves it. Seeing our son develop into a well-rounded, confident, independent, and compassionate teen is so rewarding. We wish we can take all the credit but we owe a big part of his success to Millennium's amazing teachers and staff. The co-founder and head of school, Chris Balme, and the co-founder and chairman, Jeff Snipes, are both extremely passionate about their jobs. You can tell they care deeply that each student reaches their full potential and develops a broader definition of success.
Millennium's teachers are super creative and diverse. They use engaging teaching methods, with project-based learning and socratic seminars, which leads to more advanced academic work with greater student engagement. Class sizes are small so that students feel known and seen, and faculty-student connections are strong. They get to go on incredible field trips and dive deep into historical events that also tie into current issues. Students get to practice mindfulness, do wilderness trips, visit local businesses and organizations, travel to Washington DC and also travel abroad. This year, our son did an unforgettable week long apprenticeship program and in a few months, his class will be going to Cuba!
The student body is large enough for our son to have many friends and there is a wide variety of electives, clubs, and programs. Our son is very energetic, so the practice of mindfulness has been a very effective tool for focusing in class. We appreciate the large gym where he can burn off energy by playing basketball with his friends, as well as the capoeira, dance, and qi gong classes that he really enjoys. He loves building and creating, so the makers space is one of his favorite rooms at school.
The school is informed by neuroscience, and works closely with several universities to implement cutting-edge science around adolescent development into their teaching. Students are provided with the best tools technology has to offer and the diversity and overall culture at Millennium is truly special.
One of the unique aspects of this school is that it puts a major focus on developing social and emotional intelligence, which is only possible when students feel safe emotionally and socially. Last week, parents and family members were invited to hear powerful student spoken-word performances. It was an incredibly moving experience. Our son used to be quite shy, so to see him perform was a proud parent moment.
Students are given opportunities to question, to use their own voice and to know that what they say matters. Parents are given tools to stay well informed and prepared for the transition into high school. As students grow and mature during their middle school years at Millennium, they become empowered teens that you can truly be proud of.
