Brightworks and Tinkering School were shining examples of what makes child-centric learning transformative, in spite of the pandemic. From the engaging tinkering kits we sent home with every student, to the development of entirely new kinds of distance learning like the Mars Project – which connected summer camp kids to robots in a scale model of a lava tube – our staff created ways to keep students engaged and motivated. To honor his Cherokee Heritage, Cellar 13 Winery has proudly used the Cherokee language for their 2 Bordeaux style blends - the Right Bank Bordeaux style blend is named “Aliheliga” (“Grateful” in Cherokee) and the Left Bank Bordeaux style blend is named “Tsogadu" (13 in Cherokee). Art work featured on the back of these two labels are original works from Darin’s Uncle, Cherokee Artist, John Balloue. Having had a successful career in Water Services, Darin retired in 2017 and was immediately hired as the Assistant Wine Maker at 3 Steves Winery in Livermore, CA. Given the chance to learn about wine making from start to finish at 3 Steves, Darin was later afforded the opportunity to make wine under his own label. Darcie’s great, great grandfather, Fritz R. Ruegsegger, came to America with his family from Switzerland in 1875 to pursue a career in winemaking. In 1883, Fritz’s son and Darcie’s great grandfather, Christian Ruegsegger started his own winery, the Alpine Winery, in St. Joseph, Missouri, which held bond #62 in the United States. Along with managing the vineyards and all winemaking tasks, Christian hand painted his own wine labels. The Alpine Winery bottled its last wine in 1945, when hard times following the repeal of Prohibition forced the family to shut down operations. Darcie Kent now proudly carries on the family tradition as a fifth generation vintner and artist for the winery that bears her name, Darcie Kent Vineyards. Like her great grandfather before her, Darcie uses her original art for her wine labels and strives to capture the unique spirit of each vineyard and its owner, in her breathtakingly beautiful labels that grace each bottle.
